Hha and Cnu are paralogs. The expression of the hly operon of plasmid pHly152 is modulatedby Hha/HN-S. Overexpression of Cnu(YdgT) partially suppresses the hha defect on hylA expression. Hha positively modulates H-NS expression. Induced during biofilm formation. Structural mimicry and sequence similarity between the Hha/Cnu family of H-NS binding proteins and the H-NS/Stp family N-terminal dimerization domain has been proposed (Nieto, 2002; Madrid, 2007). There is some structural resemblance between Hha/Cnu and the H-NS/Stp N-terminal but whether it reflects a homologous family relationship or convergent evolution seems uncertain.
