AtpI is not required for ATP synthase activity and is not present in the ATP synthase complex, although atpI mutants have a lower growth yield indicating an accessory role in ATP synthase function, perhaps as a non-essential membrane assembly factor (von Meyenburg, 1982; Gay, 1984). atpI has numerous rare codons and is poorly expressed. atpI is contained within one of the 20 regions of extreme structure (RES15) probably representing a highly curved DNA segment (Pedersen, 2000).
